Spaghetti and Meatballs for All

As many of you know, I have switched from teaching Grades 3/4 last year to teaching Foundation (Kindergarten) this year. During the week I was asked by a teacher in Grade 3/4 to borrow my book Spaghetti and Meatballs for All (I have a bit of a collection). I was remembering back to the activity we did last year, then realised I never shared it with you all!

We only partially read the story, then we had to come up with the problem ourselves. We had 8 tables (100's blocks) and 32 people (unit blocks) and had to come up with different arrangements for the tables, being still connected so people could talk. Here are some ideas children came up with.

There was a lot of thinking required to go into this task, I was so pleased with the time the children spent trying to work out different patterns, some even sketching in their books first.
